Poem a Day Challenge – Day 28

It is amazing how a certain scent can bring such poignant memories. Today’s prompt to write a poem about a smell brought me way back.

Outside a neighbor’s engine
stutters, skips
Roars to life
Inside the screen flashes
Volume down
A ticker tape
parade of bad news
Makes you wonder if the
sky is falling
By the grace of a
generation’s journey
You are here

But the sun slants
through the window
This morning
cupid red and sunshine yellow
tulips told you there’s
still the rolling rhythm
of the earth

You swaddle her tight
Fold her in
Newborn head
against your chin
And breathe
