Poem A Day Challenge – Day 16

Today’s prompt, is to take the phrase “(blank) System,” replace the blank with a word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write your poem. This brought me back to the recipes passed down from my Grandma and the simplicity of being in the kitchen when she cooked.

The Kitchen System

My Nanny never
had a recipe
When you asked her
how she made the
Sauce
The cake
The answer was always
Oh
A little bit of this
and a little bit of that

You learned from those hands
Working in the kitchen
Humming had to go with it
Ingredients
Rolled out
Ladled
Sprinkled
with a touch of love
That kind of love
passed down through
generations
I’m certain is the secret
Behind her system
